Supergirl season one review

I don’t know why I watched this show! At times it’s good and at times I find it really bad. Season One just finished the Friday past here in the UK on Sky One.

The intro sequence seems really cheesy to start with and you have actors return from previous incarnations. Dean Cain who played Superman in Lois and Clark, has a cameo role as Supergirl’s step dad and even Laura Vandervoort who played Supergirl in Smallville plays an arch enemy.

So throw in Ally McBeal with Kara (aka Supergirl) and a load of others and the show is off and running. Some really dodgy CGI but some suprisingly good acting to cover up a multitude of filming sins. Jon Jonzz looked really bad in CGI form and the costume doesn’t work for me either. Although Supergirl’s outfit looks good it’s not perfect either. The top part of the uniform doesn’t hug her body like it should do.

I am not sure they have really brought anything new to the table. With Arrow, we have a darker, harsher, more violent universe. Flash is not so gothic as but has the suprising dark undertones which makes for a good show.

Supergirl is too clean and perfect which is a floor, if you look at the course of the viewing figures avaliable on the Wikipedia page you will see that the show   went from nearly 13 million views on the pilot down to just over 6 million for the final episode. This doesn’t bowed well for season two, but a loyal fan base may help.

Overall after a quick introduction, saving the city people from potential doom. A coming war between Kara and the exiled Kriptonians built up and then fell flat on its face. There was a lack of dynamic content, a feeling of two dimensional characterisation. This coupled with very basic story telling, an emotional wreck of a ride, maybe there is hope for season two, but I wouldn’t count on it if they stick to the same writers. In fact I may not even bother to watch season two…

Why don’t people reply?

Every so often I send people different greeting messages, the so called friends. Is it not polite to reply to a correspondance? I often wonder why I bother trying to be friendly at all. It’s hard for me to get off the ground, those mental blockers, the self restraint.

Traits we all have and yet the politeness of conversation, I don’t want to be spiteful or hurtful to anyone, but the steel cold silence is just as offensive to me as someone telling me to fuck off.

Is waiting a day for a reply too long, but no reply in a month? Did I send to the right person? Number correct, check, email correct, check. Social media name, correct.

I am helpless to understand why a simple hello will not suffice. As the sun sets this evening I wonder did I do something wrong? Am I wrong? What went wrong. The distance between friendship grows like continental drift. Soon friendship will be the endless oceon, lost at sea currents taking you in different directions. Maybe one day an old friend might wash up on my shoreline.

Sir John Soanes Museum

13 Lincoln’s Inn Fields, London, WC2A 3BP

How many people have heard of Sir John Soane or know who he is? An architect born in the 16th century the son of a brick layer established himself as one of the greats of British architecture. He went on to collect many paintings, various pieces of architecture, different types of curious objects and even managed to acquire the sarcophagus of Seti I when the British Museum couldn’t afford it.

The museum is his old London home next to a nice little park in Holburn. It’s free to visit and I would recommend it is well worth it.

Claudia Winkleman has no style

The Sunday Time have made Winkleman a columnist for their style section. Have they gone mad? If anyone has watched any episodes of Strickly Come Dancing and seen the way she dresses you will see she has no style what-so-ever. Wearing dresses that don’t suit her, that give her a funny shape, or the dresses just look hideous.

In her very first published column she sounds aggressive and annoyed with anyone wearing flats that show your toes.   I am afraid she just won’t offer any insight or interest in real fashion.

Purple is the colour

R.I.P Prince, a true legend and a pioneer in the world of music.

I grew up listening to many of his great songs, to me he made so much great music and in a way helped shaped the person I am today.

There is one movie that Prince helped make iconic and that has to be Tim Burton’s Batman, I feel the need to watch this especially for one scene where the Joker throws money everywhere listening to one of his tracks. This is a great film, part of the new urban noir to which Prince help shaped the culture period of the 90s.

So this weekend I am going to find something purple to wear, everyone should wear something purple in tribute.

May his memory and music live on in all of us.

Repairing my Kobo Arc 7 maybe not that simple!

I’ve had a Kobo Arc since December 2012, but last year the USB charging point snapped off in the device and I haven’t been able to use it since.

I tried contacting Kobo and the response was that I should take it too WH Smiths, neither really wanted to help. Kobo didn’t offer anything to help. In fact their customer support was dreadful. Probably the worst customer support I have ever had to deal with, they are even worse than Microsoft and that’s saying a lot.

So after a little look on the web and realising it might be a simple fix I decided to have a go. So I took the back off the device took out the USB charge strip which seemed to be a snap-in. I noticed the female USB part was snapped off the strip so first I tried to solder it back on. But that didn’t really work.

So I ordered a new strip straight off of eBay which cost around £15 but for some reason after I put in the new piece it still isn’t charging. Either the strip was no good which I got or there is another fault I don’t know about. So if anyone reads this and has a suggestion let me know.

Who has a kids party in McDonalds?

At around 6pm I needed some food and decided to get a quick meal in McDonalds. After I ordered my meal I went and sat down.

What I noticed was a kids birthday party, one birthday girl sitting there laughing away with her friends. While six parents stood to one side waiting, watching, hardly talking to each other, some looking really pissed off like a fight was going to break out between them.

I over heard one couple say how pathetic it was to have to buy their own daughter a happy meal. And that it would of been cheaper to do a birthday party in the home!!

I was just about to leave but before I did I watched as some parents took some of the kids home and noticed that even half the kids seemed upset. After seeing the reactions of this event it’s clear to me for the child who birthday it was and her family that was just social suicide!

DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow, now it’s too much.

DC expands it’s universe to bring another show, we are given one new character in Captain Ric Hunter and a collection of cast members from Arrow and Flash.

I don’t really like shows playing around with the concept of time travel. I always feel that things go wrong and elements of the science are messed up.

This is where Legends of Tomorrow begins and probably will end for me. I watch for too much TV as it is. So I will stick to Arrow and the Flash which I have been enjoying.

As for Legends… At the beginning Hunter is told not to interfere with the timeline on Earth. But Hunter goes against the councils order. He takes his ship travels to Earth to the year of 2016, collects some heroes for a tale of revenge. Isn’t that the most classical of storylines?

A fight here and there, an assassin on the prowl, another evil villain in Vandal Savage. (Sounds like a wrestler name I once knew!)

There seems a much lighter touch to Legends than DCs previous shows. I prefer the dark personalities of the characters like you have in Arrow. That show felt grounded and more real.

As for Legends of Tomorrow, I found it cheesy, irritating, far from reality and the ending of Savage getting a Russian made nuclear warhead was so cliché.

Please don’t let me watch another episode.

How much for a bottle of water?

I had just drove 60 miles and needed a break so I stopped off at South Mimms Service area of the M25 motorway. I took £1 out of my car to go buy a bottle of water. I went into Starbucks first, picked up a small bottle of water, took it to the counter only to be told it was £1.65 “how much!!??” Upset at the price I marched over to WH Smiths and thought they must be cheaper…

£1.39 was the cheapest small bottle of water there was. I asked the guy at the counter if he had any drinks cheaper than a pound his answer was No!

This is a non-taxable item! Wtf do these people need to charge so much? There markup must be huge! So back into my car and carry on driving home not in the best of wear. No wonder there are fatal accidents on the road! With prices like this it explains a lot!

Deadpool Film Review

Another character comes out of the Marvel Universe and this time they call him Deadpool. A twisted child-like character bent, corrupted, twisted by another. Sometimes trailers say far too much and it could be the case for the Deadpool trailer which I watched last year. The movie was very well put together, but seemed to be missing parts too it. Even the character turns to the cinema goers to tell his story which if you read any of the comics you would know he is also his own monolog.

The film starts with what you saw in the trailer but expanded, I am not sure it flowed that well for photography, as you seemed to jump from one camera angle to another.

Then you get his back story via a retelling. A hunter-hitman, ex-army guy falls for a girl who is very much a matching personality. Then after he finds out that he is riddled with cancer another guy comes along to offer a cure to save him. Wolverines healing gene or is it the X-Gene, o wait, its X-Men again.

So a brutal treatment regime takes place and thus we have our new super-hero or anti-hero. This film to me feels like a mash up of 300, Kick-Ass in the Marvel outfit.

I did laugh at much of the comedy, although offensive I didn’t really mind as I have seen much worse on the silver screen these days.

In comes the action, slashing, shooting, dead guys, a bullet to the head. Some very corny lines from Colossus and roll credits.

That felt like a quick movie, I didn’t look at my watch once so I must have enjoyed it. Not as much as Iron Man or Guardians of the Galaxy, but not that far behind.

4 out of 5.
